Here’s a quick overview of site features (features
requiring registration/login are marked with an asterisk), beginning with the
site’s main pages:
The Home Page
Located at
http://www.nynjsurf.com, it's refreshed and updated regularly with the
latest information on contests and events in our area, as well as providing
links to all of the sites key features. The events are listed for free - if you
know of an upcoming local surf event that's not listed, it’s as simple as
sending a quick e-mail off to
webmaster@nynjsurf.com.
Navigating from the main page of the site, you’ll
find the following key pages:
Forecasting:
What's the story for today? This week? Looking to improve your personal
forecasting skills? Links for current conditions and forecasting tools are
listed here. Looking for expert advice? Subscribe to little_nasty’s 7 day
forecast!
The Galleries:
This is one of several recent enhancement to the site, with new images
appearing daily, and new galleries appearing regularly. Besides great galleries
by accomplished pro photographers like Robert Skorney and galleries of events
and contests, there are several
Forum Member Galleries where you can post up your own images*.
In addition to giving you a place to share your latest
or past adventures, the
Forum Member Galleries provide a convenient place to host your images and
create hyperlinks for posting pics in the forums, rather than relying on
services like photobucket or imageshack.
If you or someone you know is interested in having a gallery from an event or
showcasing galleries of their work here on the site, just send an email to
pics@nynjsurf.com, and we’ll get it together!
The Reading Room
Another recent feature of the site is "The Reading Room". You’ll find
original works contributed by talented writers, with some stories culled from
our own archives in our “Stories of Stoke” room or other rooms on our message
board. Additionally, we’ll archive the ever growing amazing collection of charts
and graphs that tell the story of our surf history, as produced and published by
our resident forecasting guru, little_nasty. Periodically, we’ll add in some
quotes about surf and surfing, creating what we hope becomes a small catalog of
stoke, just for the fun of it. In time, we hope to gain reprint permission from
authors for various stories and articles on surfing in our region that have been
previously published in some of the well known major publications, and preserve
them here.
NYNJSurfVids
Who doesn't love a great surf vid, especially when it's local action! That's
the idea behind our surf video archive: Focus and highlight on the local stuff!
Interested in seeing local surf action? Click on the link and check out our ever
growing collection of features great surfing on the Jersey Shore and Long
Island.
Raving On!
It's true! JoeMac is back! NYNJSurf.com is pleased to bring you the
syndicated feed for JoeMac's Raving On, a rebirth, or maybe better stated, a
continuation of Joe's great series of essays which originated on the now defunct
but fondly remembered JoeMac.net. Check it out, and enjoy!
The
Message Board:
The message board is of course the daily pulse of the site. It’s easy enough
to see all the features just by clicking around, right? That’s true, but only if
you’re registered and logged in! Find your stoke and share your stoke in the
Aloha Room*, where you can read of various forum member’s adventures and discuss
the ‘cast and what the coming days will bring. Feel free to join in, the entire
concept of the boards is to improve the sense of community both in and out of
the water.
Some other key features of the
message board not to miss:
- The
Calendar function is constantly updated – as
soon as we know of an event, it gets posted up, but it doesn’t have to wait for
us. Any registered user can post up an event and link it to a thread!
- Random Images: When you host your images in the
galleries, they become part of the pool of images that randomly appear on the
bottom of the forum’s main page.
- Special Rooms:
---- “Contests and Events” often contain
additional events beyond what we can host on the main page, or provide the
details that we can’t possibly list on the main page due to size restrictions.
Check here often, and don’t hesitate to post up new events as you hear of them –
the more excuses we have to get together, the better!
---- "Gear for Sale": Buy and sell it all
here..all “ads” are free!
---- "Shaper’s Shack and Repair Room" – Some
amazing work has been detailed here, don’t miss this room, and be sure to add
your own experiences!
Eastern Surf Association
and
Surfrider Foundation Pages
Links to all three regional ESA districts and all four local Surfrider
chapters are provided, along with convenient links to each organization’s
‘parent’ sites and membership apps and event apps when available. Lots of good
and continuously updated information on upcoming events for Surfrider and ESA is
of course always provided on the site’s main page.
Local Shops
Address/Phone number and links (where available) to all (or nearly all) surf
shops in NY and NJ are provided here – support the local guys!! Did we miss your
favorite shop? Let us know!
Local Shapers
The mantra continues – support the local guys! We have a handful of surfboard
shapers listed, if you know of someone who does great work and deserves a free
plug, send an e-mail to
webmaster@nynjsurf.com. Coming soon: links for guys specializing in board
repairs!
