12 for 12: A Dozen Images of Jersey Surf – January 12th, 2014

So far this Winter has been kind to east facing beaches, and this past Sunday's swell was no exception: Mixed sun and clouds, relatively warm, and as you can see from the images below, roping, beautiful, and barreling. Here's a dozen images from some of our favorite photogrpahers, with shots taken at a variety of spots all along the 126 miles of the Jersey Shore.

Above: A classic look from the lens of Mary Dunham. Catch more of her amazing work here —> Shore Shot Images.

Above: Maura Grogan Redy captures an early morning golden beauty in Monmouth.

Above: Bryce Nyhill with a pair of images of early morning in Manasquan.

Above: Our favorite ripping grom, Mikey Vanaman tucked in the barrel in AC.

Above: Tom Magarelli captures Central NJ thorwing down. (Credit to our great friends at Epic Shirts for the heads up on this one.)

Above: Marc Halikas capture a S Jersey surfer in the barrel, but look closely to his left, there's another going over the falls.

Above: Brittany Gomulka grabs a shot of a roping Bay Head barrel.

Above: Ken Salerno lenses in on a surfer skating one off lip on a rare central jersey lefthander.

Above: Mike Korich image of a glimmering Ocean County (via Epic Shirts).

Above: The wonderfully talented eye of Joanne O;Shaughnessy captures the dark and the light of the barrel.

Above: DJ Struntz captures Sam Hammer in his backyard for Surfing Magazine, doing what Sam Hammer does on a winter day in NJ.

Looks like more swell on tap possibly for the weekend. Perhaps this will be another in the run of solid winter swells for those with access to east facing beaches. Then again, maybe this one will this one bring a northerly breeze and day trips to Long Island. Only time will tell – but there's no denying this much – the NY NJ surf area may be cold this time of year, but it has it's occasional barreling benefits. See y'all out there. NY’s Will Skudin named ESM 2013 East Coast Surfer of the Year!

Will Skudin - Big Wave World TourCongratulations to our great friend, Big Wave World Tour Pro and local hero, New York's very own Will Skudin for being honored as Eastern Surf Magazine's 2013 East Coast Surfer of the Year! It is an award well deserved and well earned, as highlighted in the official Press Release:

Long Beach, NY (January 13, 2014) – New York's Will Skudin was named 2013 Surfer of the Year by #esm Eastern Surfing Magazine (ESM) in their annual ESeMMY Awards. Following the 2012 ESM Surfer of the Year Kelly Slater and eleven time world champion; Will Skudin states "I am honored to receive such an award like this. Just to be on that list next to guys like Kelly Slater is truly amazing and I am very grateful for all the support I have from my sponsors, friends and family. I am looking forward to the 2014 season and am proud to represent the East Coast(USA) on the #BigWaveWorldTour." #bwwt Finishing 17th in the world during the 2013 season amongst the best big wave surfers on the planet. Skudin is the first New Yorker to earn this coveted title.

Skudin recently competed in the Punta Galea Challenge as part of the Big Wave World Tour and is on the invitation list for the Todos Santos Big Wave contest in Baja California, Mexico, a break with capabilities for waves up to 60 feet. In addition to being named Surfer of the Year, Skudin received the Legendary Session award for tackling a major swell in Ireland, which earned him a nomination by #BillabongXXL for #RideoftheYear, and Cover of the Year for ESM’s June 2013 issue following a historic surf session in Tahiti.

Press releases are great, but don't quite capture what an honor and privilege it is to have Will and his entire family as such an integral part of the New York Surf Community. Congratulation, Will, from all of us!

Montauk’s Bryan Staubitser featured in ESM’s January 2014 Issue!

ESM_StaubisterSolid feature in the Janaury 2014 issue of Eastern Surf Magazine on Montauk's Bryan Staubitser, who's been charging Hawaii with the best of them.

Kudos for Bryan came from none other than our great friend and Big Wave World Tour Pro, NYSea's Will Skudin, "Bryan is a cool and humble guy that is always smiling. Every winter in Hawaii he is on bigger and heavier waves. He puts his time in, and it's great to see his progression, especially in the big stuff….can't wait to see what the future has in store for him."

Congrats Dean Randazzo – 2014 Inductee into East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame!

Dean RandazzoJanuary's Surf Expo 2014 in Florida was by all accounts a great event, made even better with the induction of NJ's own Dean Randazzo into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame, along with 9 other deserving new members.

Dean's Induction ceremony bio read as follows:

"An extraordinary athlete with multiple high level placings while competing in the ESA and NSSA. Dean was also a top performer on the NSSA national team. A series of strong performances on the PSAA and Bud Tour in the late eighties early nineties, then qualified him for the WCT world tour in 92/93 which he completed without a major sponsor … a feat nearly unheard of today. Was diagnosed with cancer a couple years later. Through pure perseverance he beat that and after created a new foundation to support those in need of financial help after being diagnosed. Four times he has had to battle back himself from relapses and then last year helped organize and participated in the Paddle for a Cause, a 22 mile paddle a round Absecon Island. A truly inspiration figure. Clearly no one has done more to make surfing a viable career for the Jersey Pro surfer than Dean."

Besides his incredible work with the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation, Dean is busy these days with his new shop in Atlantic City, Jersey Devil Surf. We congratulate Dean, and look forward to many more years of seeing and surfing with "The Dazzler"!
